It's a misconception that they're a bunch of programmers ready to jump on whatever project the university throws at them. Very fair question, though let's leave the CS department out of it. Faculty here take the cost of course materials very, very seriously, always advocating for students. And the department negotiated fiercely with the publisher to get the best deals. During the last review, Stewart's book with WebAssign was deemed to be the best choice. Once in a while, that includes the textbook and any online homework systems. So the department continually reviews its calculus sequence, making adjustments as needed. You want an ecosystem that will help the under-prepared students catch up and succeed, as well as push the students who are doing well. All having different backgrounds in math. Several thousand (I think around 8k+ last time I checked) students go through the calculus sequence every year. Picking a textbook and an online homework system for a multi-semester calculus sequence that satisfies the needs of so many different students is a tedious process. Why we put up with this: student success. The largest chunk of the money goes to Cengage. A small percentage of the cost goes to the WebStore for cost recovery. WebAssign is paid a flat fee from the publisher (Cengage). We held out the longest.Īs to who's getting paid: none of the faculty at U of I are paid.

The publisher (Cengage) took away the "homework only" option for WebAssign country-wide.
